Last week was my very first week back from my medical LOA! I was lucky to have taken my leave right before the pandemic hit, so I didn't have to endure the chaos of the sudden switch to vet school from home. However, that means now I have to scramble to figure out virtual vet school while transitioning back into the student mindset. Thankfully, I have plenty of seasoned classmates who are pros at virtual schooling to help me make adjustments and figure out the COVID testing schedules and protocols!
I knew that switching to an at home classroom was going to be taxing on my body, especially as I'm only 6 months into an 18 month recovery. So, I spent the month of December putting together my dream office! I figured now is the perfect time for me to invest in my office space since I am about to be spending the majority of my time here! I went ahead and compiled a list of my must haves (plus somethings I just really loved) for an accessible, comfortable, and productive office space.
I personally struggle to concentrate when things aren't organized and aesthetically pleasing. I seem to always use organizing and tidying my workspace as an excuse to procrastinate my work, so I wanted to make sure I put in place a system that was guaranteed to be sustainable and practical. As someone with attention and concentration issues, minimizing the amount of time I need to leave my desk once I am in a grind is KEY. Every time I need to leave my desk to grab something out of a different drawer or from my printer across the room, I open myself up for chances to get distracted or forget what I was doing entirely! The space I have created serves as a central, all-encompassing hub to set myself up for success.

Must Haves
1. At the top of my list would have to be my Stand Up Desk Frame. This desk frame was the perfect match for me! You can program your sit and stand preferences so you can switch with the push of just one button. No cranking and minimal time between positions. You can also adjust the height 0.1 inch at a time if you want to get the perfect fit for you and your needs! This was a must have for me because of my neck and several joint issues. My hips dislocate multiple times throughout the day, so being able to seamlessly switch to a standing desk during a lecture is definitely a priority for me. I chose to buy the frame separately because in my research I actually found that it was so much cheaper to purchase the frame and table top separately. Plus, I was able to build and stain my own top that was the exact size I wanted in order to maximize my space.
2. Monitor
Take my word for it, having a monitor that connects to your laptop is a GAME CHANGER when staring at your computer screen for hours on end. I'm so glad I made the switch.
This is pretty Macbook specific, but with the new updated USB-C ports on the later Macbook Pros, I found that investing in a one size fits all solution was the best way to go.
Solve all your outlet and electronic device needs with this one power strip tower. You can shut off each column individually to save power and disconnect the devices you aren't using without the need to unplug and replug. Plus there is a column of all USB ports, eliminating your need for multiple bricks and saving you space.
5. Laptop Stand
Another game changer for virtual vet school. I didn't understand the hype until I took the plunge, so just trust me on this one. Your eyes and neck will thank you.
If you need one, this is a good one! Simple as that!
Saves space and keeps your desk organized! Has two hidden features I personally love: a phone stand AND a hidden drawer for pens, highlighters, etc. to be right at your disposal!
Okay, I know this is a boujee one, but trust me it is WORTH IT. It is the most adjustable one I have found on the internet, and the added faux leather pad offers so much more comfort than the average plastic top foot rest!
Keeps your pup locked in with you so you can keep an eye on him OR keeps him out and out of your hair without needing to crate him!
10. Any Type of Large White Board
If you're a student, this one needs no explanation. 'Nough said, ya know?
